Wo Hop is definitely the antithesis of this. I would like them to have a nice atmosphere, not be crowded or noisy, etc. I am generally rather fussy about places to which I go to each. It should be noted that my wife is Chinese and agrees 100% with everything I’ve written in this post. So, that Chinese restaurants in NYC generally are not similar to food served in restaurants in China is a good thing. Went to Beijing, Shanghai and 4 other cities. Well, then that means someone you know thinks it’s good! Is the food “authentic”? I’d have to say no and I’d have to say “That’s a good thing!” I spent 12 days in China last year. One of the most interesting things about their reviews was that all of them said that the place was “recommended” to them. I would find the detracts comical, except that I worry about such people roaming freely without supervision. People introducing other people to the place – saying how they went with their parents decades ago and how they bring their own kids now. You may have to wait on line for a bit, but everyone agrees that it is totally worth it. You MUST go to #17 in the basement and not #15 at street level. I was curious to read some of the other reviews here – both good and bad. 2 of us ate our fill and still had some to take home all for under $25. Wo Hop was severing it 15 years before most other Chinese restaurants. Both the flavor and texture were fantastic! The Chow Fun was great, just as it has been for decades. The shrimp were not only jumbo (by anyone’s standards) but they were done perfectly. The food is just SO GOOD! Today we had Jumbo Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce and Roast Duck Chow Fun. I ate there today and thought that I must review it despite there being so many reviews for it already. I have been going to Wo Hop for 32 years and have never been disappointed.
